Riding...........

...........my bike quite a bit lately.......not as often as i should.......but we won't go there.....This past Friday i had a wild hair and decided to try to ride my bike to my husband's work. Its only 8 miles and i've been up to 9 this summer but ....and this is a huge BUT there is alot of uphill on the way to his work......you know Tx is flat right?......so i found the hills daunting to say the least......plus the traffic......anyway lets just say i could find lots of 'excuses' not to do this......but then one morning you wake up with a 'Wild Hair' and throw caution to the wind and Just Do It! Helmet? Check!....gel-padded fingerless gloves? Check!.....Keys?Check!.....Gum?Check!.....Phone to call hubby in case i get lost?Check!...........and off we go!
.........the first half was on the now familiar bike path but then i went up and over a bridge telling me that equestrians have the right of way and off i went into unknown territory.......I still managed to stay on a bike path most of the way.....passing vineyards now heavy with grapes......i noticed the vineyards were twinkling....almost like christmas lights ....if you have an imagination like mine:)...they had strips of reflective tape tied to the vines to scare off the birds and with the sun hitting them it was magical! Kinda took my mind off the headwind.....then i came to an intersection......turned the corner right into a serious uphill.........but i made it huffing and puffing at the top and enjoyed a glorious downhill.......the uphill and downhill was along the side of the road in a bike lane then i was able to veer off onto another bike path.
~
~.........more twinkling vineyards.........more wonderfully fit bikers blowing past me.......more uphill.......uuughh.......a tricky, busy ,no light intersection and another glorious downhill........watching rich people play golf in the vineyards.....$150 green fee...yikes!.......and finally i see the VA hospital looking like a white castle on the hill ........yes on TOP of the hill.......well at this point my legs feel like jello and i decide to commit the ultimate disgrace and WALK my bike up the last hill to his work.......its so steep theres no way i was gonna make it.....but its definitely something i want to tackle in the future........tried calling hubby to tell him i'm COMING!.......but terrible reception there.......I get there just when people are leaving work...sitting in their air-cond cars.....one slows down .....its a lady.....rolls down her window....leans out and YELLS.......'Your Crazy! Its 95 degrees out there!'.......then rolls up her window probably cranks up the air and drives on.........really?.........You couldn't just say 'Great Job!' 'Way to go!'........Okay didn't know it was 95 but really the heat here just doesn't feel the same......the breeze from the bike kept me cool......i felt good! and really proud of myself for making it that far! and up all those hills........good thing she didn't notice i didn't have any water......in my defense it was only 8 miles!
~
~ On a side note..........the turkeys glared at me all the way up that last hill.........i think they know........i think they know i've been swiping their discarded feathers for crafting purposes........damn.........Hugs! deb
PS.....the metal flowers are from a San Francisco trip.......

No disgrace in walking up a hill. It just gives you something to work for. Great job!

And always take water - 8 miles and you need it. :D

Yeah good for you. Cali has lots of hills and that's some huffin to go 8 ,miles. 95 probably feels like nothing after your Texas heat. Love those metal flower sculptures, wow. I was thinking spoons would be cool to use too. I would have walked up that last hill too! xox

Good for you!! I've always heard that the heat in CA feels different, but 95 is still 95 to me. Too hot! I don't have a bike for that reason. Very hilly here and just too hot in summer. I'm a weather weenie.
I LOVE these metal flowers. How cool!
