Experimenting......

Do you like to experiment?? I LOVED science class....especially Biology......And once in awhile in every day life something will pop in my head and i'll go 'Hey...i could do an experiment!' LOL!  I have these bulb vases . I had three but one didn't survive the trip from TX.  I was at Orchard hardware store........never heard of them before CA but they are everywhere here.....A nice smaller, convenient place to go if you need something quick and don't want to run all the way over to the big orange box or blue box......In , out, DONE!  Okay this is not an advertisement for Orchard. lol THIS is an experiment Bwaaahhaaaaa!!!!!  Well they had bulbs for sale 75% off......most of them had seen better days but i did find a package of hyacinth bulbs that looked viable .........

I wondered.......and yes all experiments first start with a question......Do you question things alot?? I do. I like to know the 'why' of things.......I wondered what would happen if i put bottled water in one vase and tap water in the other.........maybe nothing...but then again maybe SOMETHING! :) The first thing i noticed was that the root system on the tap water(on the right) has grown much more quickly and is very profuse and full and the bottled water one (on the left)is a little skimpy....Could that be because of the water???

Hubby thinks it is......he says the tap water has alot more minerals and such in it helping the plant to grow....bottled water has nothing in it to help the plant......I think he's right but since this is not a tightly controlled experiment there could be other factors....like one bud vase is larger than the other......also even though they are the same variety of plant (hyacinth) their genetic make up could be different......thats why you can plant two of the same tree in your yard and one could do better than the other just because one may be genetically stronger......anyway so there could be other factors involved than just water but i think its interesting about the roots...

I LOVE spring flowers......tulips and daffodils and crocus and paperwhites but none of them smell like spring to me like the hyacinth....... I cannot wait until the wonderful scent permeates my kitchen......stay tuned! Hugs! deb

To Brighten a Bleak and Dreary Winter....

You must be so tired of hearing about the work going on at my house... But sadly thats about ALL thats been going on....The wonderful progress we've been making has come to a halt and it looks like we have to back up and regroup....You know ..they tried and i have to give them A+ for effort ...but... the texture on the walls does not match up...........it just doesn't.....no matter how much i want it to ......we ALL want it to ....it just doesn't .....you can still see a line all the way around the rooms where they cut the 1 foot of sheetrock off the walls and then replaced it.......And with it being a brand new home....and we are looking at reselling 4-5 years down the road it just really needs to be as close to perfect as we can make it........So hopefully next week they will start retexturing the entire walls all the way up to the ceiling and then repainting......sigh....Theres just no reason not to do it right......So i'm sad to say you'll be getting more house reports......

This is a MailArt postcard i've been working on the last few days.... From working on the Magnolia Tree Seed Pod Tree.....thats a mouthful....lol.....i had some scraps of green paper left over and i HATE to throw anything away.........This is made on a piece of Honey Bunches of Oats cereal box. It is so pretty and bright in person....not sure if the pictures do it justice.......I can just see it flying through the mail brightening everybody's day who comes in contact with it....I'm getting kind of used to the Post Office people just shaking their heads and grumbling when i bring them a piece of MailArt to send off.  It used to kind a hurt my feelings....I do my best to leave them a place to put the stamps and i make the address nice and clear .... I have yet to find a clerk that just smiles and  goes...'Oh My thats pretty' and sends it on its way.....I guess i expect too much.....Well i hope these bright colors made YOU smile today!! Hugs! deb

Sorry I've Been Scarce.........

I'm so sorry i've been scarce here in blogland but things have been just a LITTLE crazy........We've gone from nothing happening on the house to a 100 miles an hour!  Sheetrock...tape and floating...texture and now paint is happening today......whew...the people in and out....questions...decisions....no english.......yadda yadda yadda the list goes on but the important thing is its getting done.......no matter if my nerves are frayed from air compressor noises and pounding of the airgun.....and today i'm sure it will be paint fumes.....lol.....its getting done......they are trying to match the kitchen cabinets kickboard all around the bottom and then next week it will be carpet....then maybe....maybe things will slowly get back to normal again..... Everything has to come back inside that we quickly put out in the garage.....or ferried upstairs.......to get it out of the water.....

I have squirreled myself away in the craftroom for most of the days...peeking out ........'checking' on things now and then or buried my head in a book or surfing online......just trying to stay out of the way....... I've managed to accomplish some things in the craft room....very close to calling it DONE on the tree ....started a MailArt postcard.......just fiddling.....I still find myself stressed by the end of the day when hubby comes home..... Two years of being home (not working) i've come to really enjoy and treasure my solitude and no matter how nice and friendly and courteous and efficient these people are i just really REALLY want my house back ..........Hugs! deb

Theyre heeerreee.......

We'll he's here........one guy....listening to country western music....is insulating my walls and putting sheet rock up....Jinx is squirreled away in the master bedroom behind a shut door and HE IS NOT HAPPY......but i don't want to have to worry about him with this guy going in and out the front door........but Jinx sure is voicing his opinion and thumping at the door....sigh...hang in there kitty......

I already had to 'speak up' once........so not my forte but i steeled myself and pointed out that the contract said R19 insulation and he had carried in R13........sigh......i HAD to say something right?? So...i did........He called his boss and his boss is bringing him some R19.......... He explained to me that there are some places he will have to use the R13 because the wall has 2x4's and won't fit R19 but there are definitely places that use 2x6's and will put the R19 there. Geesh! Am i on my toes or what?? lol!

Also when reading the contract i noticed they charged us to removal of carpet ........um..........no you didn't remove the carpet the water removal people pulled and removed the carpet......BAM! caught that!  So what a learning experience this has been....I'm just so, so happy its started........Hugs! deb

Down the Rabbit Hole...............

I know.......i know......i'm suppose to working on a little tree....but i ran into a little snafu with that....something i bought from Hobby Lobby ended up being damaged so while i try to think of a way to improvise i got to sketching.....I started making the little swirls at the bottom left hand corner , having no idea where it was gonna go....and this is what became of it. I'm not thrilled with the composition the flower bud on the right looks i don't know a little wonky?? lol......If i ever mess with this image again i might do away with that bud and just let the vine climb up the iron fence.........I was hoping this picture was going to be a little larger so you could see all the crazy detail........ but blogger doesn't seem to be cooperating...... sigh.....it used to give options on picture size right? well i don't see that anymore.....

i also decide to try putting a watermark on it....The last black and white image i posted ......remember the peacock one??? is still my most frequented post and i find it all over the place so i thought maybe i better try to put my name on it......i did sign it on the original but i thought if this image is going to make the rounds of the internet it might as well bring me some traffic no? Anyway i hope its not too distracting down there in the corner :)

Work still has not started on the house........I'm not looking forward to having all those workers in here but i'am SO ready to get this house put back together.......we've been living in half a house........lol......almost feels like the apartment again.....The rug guy tells me he found out carpet! Yeah! I hope it matches closely to the carpet on the stairs.....if nothing else the dye lots will be different .....cross your fingers......hugs!deb

******Update....i found how to make the picture larger....lol...just run your cursor over the image and it gives you options.sm med lg xlg etc.....at least thats better.......I'll bet it ate up some of my picture storage capacity ......won't be doing that often but i so wanted you to see the details!

Do you Love it???...

I'm lovin' it!!........not quite finished it.....so hang on you'll be seeing some more pictures but i wanted to show you that its standing up!!! Air dry clay on the inside of the pot holding it all together.....Its hard to tell but i took the wood burner and put a few swirls on the 'trunk'..... I have one or two more things to add then i'm leaving it alone......maybe i should leave it alone now but since this is my first one i want to experiment with it......I have about 4 more lined up  to do in different colors......does it look like a little topiary tree or a painted Magnolia Tree seed pod??? LOL! Hugs! deb

A Little on the Morbid side......

Quick Update on this post.......I made a new post on my newly reactivated RunDebRun blog for anyone who is interested.....
Okay this is the craft project i decided not to show you over the Holidays....and maybe i should save it for a Halloween post but i'd rather stay 'in the moment' and just show you what i'm working on WHEN i'm working on it.......I wanted to start a ceramic piece and this is one of the oldest pieces i have........he's been languishing on my shelf for YEARS.........I painted him black...fully intending on dry brushing him..........lesson learned.........I do NOT have patience for dry brushing.....layer upon layer..upon layer...upon...you get the idea........I have a new appreciation for dry brush artists and i know I'am not one!

I have to tell you this! As i was painting on about three coats of  offwhite (ivory) paint i started to feel like an archaeologist! With my little brush cleaning off all the dirt from this skull i just dug up. Weird huh?  See what a good imagination will get ya?! LOL!

THEN........i remember he had a brother! i took a class on pouring ceramics while we were stationed in Germany with the army eons ago . I then taught hubby and one year a few years ago we spent many many weekends at the craft center on the Airbase we lived close to pouring ceramics......We'd pick out the molds....get them poured and while waiting for them to dry we'd walk over to the Bowling Alley and get lunch.......did hubby fall head over heels with ceramics?? no but he is head over heels for me and it was wonderful hours spent together and his muscles where much appreciated when it came time to pour out the extra slip.

So this is where the Brother's Grimm stand now.....since i wasn't drybrushing i decided to antique.........after you get it painted the way you want you rub antiquing gel all over it them wipe it off and it stays in all the nooks and crannies.....I think i may darken it aroud the eyes some more but otherwise i'm pretty happy with it and its so nice to finally FINISH something!!!  Woohoo!
On the house front.......still waiting for approval from the insurance company........hopefully by the end of the week something will be getting done around here........I sure am tired of having my house tore up.......i'm ready to get back to 'normal' ....whatever that may be......Hugs! deb

The Ocean Followed Me Home..........

..............Has that ever happened to you???..........let me explain..............Now that i can finally hear myself think i need to get on here and let you know i did not take off touring the country, running around saving the turtles from my last post.......nope.....I do have some self control.....heh......What did happen is Hubby and i were treated to a trip to the coast for a Christmas present!! Hello Ft. Bragg and Mendocino .....absolutely gorgeous!  Just what hubby needed to relax......he laughed...he played...he slept all the way home!Had a wonderful, wonderful time.  When we got back to the 'Gifter's' house (about midnight) we decided to go ahead and drive the hour to hour and a half home.  Just was not looking forward to another night on the air mattress....our age is showing......lol.........Little did we know that pesky ocean was following us home!

I have so many posts planned for here........finishing the craft project and i'd much rather show you more pictures of the Beach but i thought you'd like to hear why i've been missing in action for awhile......When we pulled up in our driveway i noticed some water on the sidewalk.......it hadn't rained and it wasn't like the water marks from the sprinklers being on.......it was more like something was draining.........hubby opens the front door and ......................steps into 2 inches of water covering the entire bottom floor of the house! I'm gonna go ahead and say it.....OH MY GOD!.........We were in shock! The waterline in the back of the frig connected to the icemaker had come loose who knows when??? We left about 3pm Fri afternoon and returned about 1am Sunday morning!  Hubby got the water stopped and i started calling Jinx.  I thought for sure he had been stranded upstairs........his litter box was downstairs...in the flood and his food.........so i though surely he must have had to do his business up there and i was not looking forward to that!  But no Jinx...........

I called and called and finally..........the most pitiful MEOW i've ever heard came from the living room.....he must have jumped up on the window sill or the washer/dryer......somewhere right? He was UNDER THE COUCH huddled in all the water like a drowned rat........can you believe it?  why wouldn't he make a run for the stairs??but no he sat in the water until we came home.....in his defense lol.........under the couch has always been his sanctuary.....when people come over or i turn on the vaccum......zoom under the couch he goes until his curiosity wins him over........plus he would have had to go right by the spraying water to get up the stairs......silly cat......i can only hope he would have gotten out of the water before he started blowing bubbles.........

The damage...............oh boy.........do you really want to know?........Well the pictures should tell the story.....Hubby and i immediately started bailing water........getting what we could up out of the water.....Hubby pushed a broom with the bluetooth attached to his head making phone calls.....i wielded a dust pan scooping water out the door...it really was just a drop in the bucket......We called about half a dozen water removal companies each of them turning us down saying either they don't service our area or said they would call us back and never did until finally someone took pity on us........While waiting for them hubby called a coworker and he brought his wet/dry vac over  and that helped us make a dent in it.  We really had a moment there before we got a hold of anyone of feeling very alone and just us against this wall of water..........but us against the world we know how to do that!...The backs of my legs were so sore the next day from bending over ,scooping i could hardly move! :)

The water removal comapny that came to our rescue at 2am in the morning was Advanta Clean of Central Valley..........they really do deserve mention here......they were amazing....they worked 12 hours straight to getrdone.........however i do think we are in the wrong line of work.....$225 an hour!!! and that does not include the cost of the machines.....$35 a day per machine......7 machines......4days.....And those machines! LOUD! does not come close to describing them......24/7.......just really grates on your nerves.......we kind of huddled in the master bedroom upstairs with the door closed most of the time......But i'm happy to say the machines are gone now........they cut the sheetrock about a foot off the floor and removed the insulation the same..........tore the rugs out......I lost about 20 books i had stacked on the floor ....sniff sniff.....the couches are on plastic legs.......the coffee/end tables are on metal legs.......the curio cabinet and roll top desk seem to have survived unblemished and the diningroom table and chairs as well...... the carpet will need to be replaced and new sheetrock and insulation on the walls.........the bottom of the kitchen cabinets and island warped so that will need to be replaced but other than that we faired well........ or at least it could have been a whole lot worse......my Jinky boy survived the ordeal and is back to his cuddly , loveable self......

Once we pay the deductible everything else will be taken care of........So far USAA insurance has been great thru the whole process.......the contractor was here yesterday measuring etc......working up his bid......and from what he says by the end of the month things should be back to normal around here........What a way to end 2012 or begin 2013 however you want to look at it........I prefer to say end 2012 as it was still 2012 when the flood actually happened so this is a new year! Don't forget to count your blessing...and if your away from home and feel the urge to go back home...listen...oh and keep an eye on that pesky, sneaky ocean.......it likes to follow you home! Hugs! deb
