I'm a Little Late.........

............to the birdy bandwagon.....but then i'm almost a always a little behind the 8ball......I think most people might be getting a little tired of seeing the little birdy thing.....but i have yet to own any. So i decided to make my own or....guess i should say 'decorate' my own 'cause i bought these cute birdy shapes at the craft store....picked out some scrapbooking paper i fell in love with from 'the Paper Studio' and got to work....this is a picture heavy post but hey i wanted to show you what i was up to on my little 'Summer Break'..

I used the little birdy to outline the shapes on the scrapbook paper...and cut them out.....easy peasey......

I painted the birdies a dark chocolate brown.....

and just so you don't think it was allll easy peasy.... i wanted to show you my first little birdy decoupage attempt...um...yeah...not good....when i tried to decoupage this i got terrible bubbles underneath and the more i tried to smooth it the worse it looked until finally i decided it was not salvageable ....luckily i had enough paper to cut out another birdy.

To make it easier on myself.....i do tend to do things the hard way...instead of putting Mod Podge on the WHOLE bird then carefully line up the paper and try to smooth it all out.... I only put the Mod Podge on a small portion...like in the above picture...lined things up and smoothed it out with guess what???

an old gift card...It Worked Like A Charm!!...then i carefully lifted up the edge of the paper...added more Mod Podge and smoothed it out with the gift card...not a wrinkle or a bubble one....

...........they really went together lickety split after that.  This next part i'm still debating whether i like it or not....I had a wood post left over from another project and i cut it into varying heights....painted it the same dark brown....and with just a spot of glue attached the birds.......

I decided i'm going to live with them awhile first to see if i like them on that post......I have all this wonderful shelf space above my kitchen cabinets to fill with curios and this is just the beginning.

........tell me what you think .....to post or not to post...that is the question....i like them at the varying heights....maybe its the shiney finish on the post i'm not liking...i can fix that......Love to hear what you think ....Its the first spot of color in the house!  Hugs! deb

I want to thank everyone for your kind words and support thru Jennibellie. You'll never know just how much it means to me.....

Summer Break............

At one time or another this summer everybody seems to be taking a bloggy break. I have so many projects in the works , seems like a good idea to try to  wean myself away from the computer for a week or two.

Never fear i shall return! :) Hopefully with some new things to show and tell......maybe an adventure or two if the stars align just right....Be good, be safe and see you soon!!! Hugs! deb

An Epiphany........

But before we get to that i better apologize for the terrible pictures...I have such a difficult time getting good pictures of my artwork......I hope you can at least see what 'epiphany' i'm talking about...lol.......Above is the entire sketch......Its pretty much done...i may find it needs another doodle or two as i go along but for now we'll call it done...... As you can see the black and white worms or vines or whatever you call them have made a return....I don't know what it is about them but i love a shot of black and white in an otherwise colorful picture....

Now for the epiphany.......In the above picture see how the 'sea urchins' just follow along the edge of the rock? Looks nice right? But very well lets say 'flat', one dimensional....My 'ah ha'! moment came when i tried sketching some sticking over the edge......

I think it added so much to the drawing. You can see it not only in the above picture but the couple below too....
here........
and here too........such a simple little tweak that made a huge difference..........at least to my eye.......i hope you can see it too

And just because this post is so terribly, boringly black and white here's a shot of color for you........now imagine that orange hair against a blue (water) background?? Its gonna be gorgeous! Hugs! deb

Long Weekend Project...............

Looks like my Project Supervisor is sleeping on the job! :) Jinx kept me company while i worked out in the garage over the weekend. It gets pretty warm out there without air condition  but Jinx just seems to drink up that warmth...

Still remember that bookcase hubby built? Well .....it became a stalled project that was taking up major room in hubby's garage....so that was my vow for the weekend...just bite the bullet and GetRDone! We initially tried to stain it......but you know how sometimes your dreams overload your hummingbird ability?....well try as we might we just didn't like how it looked......Its more difficult than you think to pick out just the right stain color.....anyway so ditch that idea.......so we painted it.....and ditto with the paint color....theres so many to choose from.....uughh......but i do like what we ended up with......But then i thought....it just looks so plain....those leaves just get lost in the paint.....thats when i broke the news to him that i was gonna paint each one of the leaves copper.........He said..".yeah...see ya next year..."

He of little faith.........I got them all painted......then i wanted the little vines to stand out more so i used Antiquing Medium.

Just dab it all on ...make sure it gets in all the little cracks and crevices and wipe it off being careful not to wipe it out of the indentations.... At first i thought i had a problem and i was preparing myself to have to paint all those leaves again because the Antiquing Medium really dulled them. But they really brightened up when i applied the sealer........panic aborted! whew!  So now! Drumroll please....................

Ta da!!!!!!!!! I think it turned out wonderful!!! Hubby points out this crooked shelf and that wonky edge but i tell him its perfect! I cherish all the imperfections. If i wanted it flawless i would have bought one at the store......This one was made by the man i love. With his own two hands....hands that do not belong to a master carpenter but someone who is trying to figure it out as he goes along.  My man who dared to dream big (9ft tall) and make his sketch come to life........Just two more units to go.....

And just for good measure.....its Jinxy approved!

I hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th! We were HOT here 108 so just alot of hibernating going on.... But alot of other people were having a blast.....literally....it sounded like WWIII around here.....airborne fireworks are illegal in California (because of fire danger)but i think someone forgot to tell the public.....next year hubs and i are gonna sit on our chairs on the front porch with a cool drink and watch the show.....As long as they don't burn my house down were good! Hugs! deb

Hand Cramp!...............

.............its been all about circles around here! Wow.......thats all i can say........I always get in over my head but with a little time and patience i love the end result........Above is a picture of an unfinished MailArt postcard for my friend Eileen, The Artful Crafter...........You can find her over there on my blog roll. As you can see still using the postcards to figure stuff out before putting on canvas.............. Here i tried out techniques for the rope around the door.......
It was more difficult to draw the pebbles because of the texture of the canvas. So i had to slow down and concentrate. But i think it turned out great. You can see the variations of light and dark pebbles nicely. The more i work on this canvas the more i see the merits of the advice from June, at A Creative Dreamer, over there on my blogroll.  She advised me to start from the back and work forward.....I did not do that and it has been a challenge working around everything. Its not that i can't do it the way i'm doing it but starting with the background  and working forward will just make it easier on myself. And there's nothing wrong with easier. :)That June she's just a wealth of knowledge and i thank her for sharing with me!

*** I made it out the door again this morning for a walk! A slim crescent moon was holding back the dawn......lawn sprinklers left diamonds on the grass......cool breeze still coming in my window....Have a wonderful 4th of July! We'll be hibernating ....up over the century mark again....Hugs! deb

Melting......I'm Melting...........

..........well not really but i hear shoes are melting in Arizona.... 107 here yesterday.... 111 predicted for tomorrow....really?...wow.... We've just been in hibernation mode around here....... This morning i dragged my butt out of bed at 4am with hubby and saw him off to work then i marched right upstairs put on my walking clothes and headed out the door by 5am for a walk ....Oh it was gloriously cool and everyone's sprinklers kicking on felt good on my bare legs as i walked by.....Walked a good 40 minutes and threw open the windows when i got home to bring in some of that cool air..... Ofcourse it didn't last and here at 9am i have the air back on....uuughh.....  We have still managed to turn off our air condition at night and open the windows...... we get to listen to everyone else's air condition drone on and on......
In the picture above now you can see what the mermaids will be holding.... keys!.... Keys to open the next door in your life.... which one will you choose? Think you can catch a little mermaid sprite?

Still lots and lots of doodling going on  with this picture. Its 11" x 15".... kinda large for doodling...... I had a difficult time drawing those starfish.....don't ask me why.....big learning curve there....i kept trying to draw them with skinny arms like the vines......I'm really itching to start coloring on this one but i want a black and white line copy first and its too big for my scanner so will have to hit one of the office supply stores and have a copy made..... Stay cool everyone! Hugs! deb
