Fourth Friday Challenge..........

HI there!!! I'm taking part in June's Fourth Friday Challenge over there at A Creative Dreamer. What really challenges me?? Paint... Painting on canvas in particular. Why....... ?  I think......oh boy....yes...I think i fear failing...... fear of it not turning out how i want it to.... What exactly do i think will happen if its a failure?  I don't know...... Maybe i think the sky will fall.....the world will come to an end..... I. don't. know.  But its there..... And its something i have to deal with if i want to paint....and i SO want to paint.......  So........ for this Challenge i took a deep breath and put a brand spanking new canvas on my brand spanking new easel courtesy of my wonderful hubby and i got busy...... In the pic above i crinkled up and the tore up some tissue paper and applied it to the canvas with Mod Podge........ I have to tell you that was so relaxing and so much fun...........

...........then i started putting white and antique white acrylic paint on the canvas...... i got so frustrated with the paint brush not blending it how i wanted that i said to myself what i really wanna do is use my fingers........so i did....... lol....... I turned the music up and started dabbing away......

Its so funny....... If you look at the canvas you can tell what song was playing on the radio........ Michael Jackson's 'Beat it' produce short choppy little strokes but say Cyndi Lauper's 'Time After Time' produced long smooth strokes......... so funny....... I regret all that wild , music induced finger painting as the texture of it tends to cover up the fine texture i produced with the tissue paper...... lesson learned....... But oh my ....... it was so much fun.......:)

I apologize for the lighting........ Its really horrible...... But California is seeing some much needed rain! Woohoo!!! And you will NEVER hear me complain about the rain.......

Here's a little hint about where this is going........This month's Fourth Friday Challenge got me started and i'm shooting for next month's challenge to get me to the finish line with this painting......or pretty darn close...... I can't wait to see what everybody else has been working on! Hugs! deb

Movie and Book Reviews..............

I just realized its been quite awhile since i've given you my opinion on anything book or movie related and i KNOW you must be dying to know what i think......... lol

And i thought i would let you look at some lovely MailArt i've received recently. Above is from June over there at Creative Dreamer as part of her Postcard swap. Isn't it purrrty?!

I have had my nose in a trio of books by Dean R Koontz. SCARY books.....!!! Mr. Koontz writes under several monikers but it seems the ones under Dean R Koontz i enjoy the most. The three books are
'The Servants of Twilight'
'Darkfall'
'Phantoms'
That is the order i read them and each one was better than the one before....... Be prepared to snuggle a little deeper under the covers as you read these! Eyeing all the dark corners of your bedroom.......Bwaaahahhaaa......  Now i've changed gears and picked up a classic . I try to read at least one classic a year. Right now its Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I might have read it in school.........if i did i don't remember..... I'am a few chapters in  and i must say .....as of now i prefer the movie...lol.. the one with Keira Knightley......

This is a lovely card and ATC i received from Eileen over there at The Artful Crafter. When taking a break from 'Helping Crafters to be' she will send me something fabulous in the mail. Her attention to detail is just incredible.  Always so professional looking! I just love opening my mailbox and seeing something from her!

Hubby and i have been kind of in a funk about going to the movies.... just not much to make us want to go.  Theres been alot of  .........'yeah i'd like to see that'........  but not much of 'Oh! I GOTTA see that!!'  If you know what i mean......Trying to remember what the last movie i told you about was.... i need to keep better records...... :)   How about 'Gravity' with Sandra Bullock...... LOVED it! If you get a chance to see it on the big screen DO IT!  I'm not sure if its still around though..... I think its much better on the big screen than it will be on TV.  The only thing hubby and i missed with this movie was 'Where are the Aliens?' LOL! Yes.... we do watch too much scifi! :)

Monuments Men...... LOVED it! Great story.  I noticed most of the people in the theatre were my age or older.....so that may be who it will appeal to.... but its definitely worth a look see.....

Three Days to Kill...... with Kevin Costner..... seems like Kevin Costner has more haters out there than people who love his movies but i'am on of them...... Was this his best film.......no....was it good ...yes.... I like his epic movies the best..... you know the ones that are like three hours long.....lol.... I LOVED 'Dances with Wolves', 'The Postman', and 'Waterworld'........ but the critics not so much... He did good in this film. i enjoyed the interaction between him and his daughter... If you don't go to the movies to see this , then at least rent it.....

Well thats it..........I have several i would like to see........ they just didn't grab me to drag myself to the movie theatre..... but i will see when they come out on video....... 'Saving Mr. Banks' and 'Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit' and 'I Frankenstein' and 'Frozen' and 'Pompeii' . Feel free to chime in...... and if you seen any of these here on my wish list i'd love to know what you thought of them......

Getting ready for 4 days of rain here in CA! Woohoo....... Hard to believe they are predicting only about an inch of rain. But really it never really RAINS here .....its more of a mist..... not the torrential downpours/thunderstorms we used to get in TX....But no matter we'll take it..... Gonna go lay down some fertilizer in the yard so the rain can water it in..... Take care! Hugs! deb

Multitasking..........

and prioritizing.......... I just work better if i have multiple 'balls in the air'......lol.... I apologize for the slightly fuzzy picture..... again trying to master hubbys camera.... how i miss my little Kodak Easy Share........ but i will make this work at least until i find another little camera i love..... Here you are looking at my Yogurt Cup project (what is it going to be???? ) and that ball is part of the project that has all those petals i took apart( I thought the ball was paper mache ..um no....had to use a drill to get that hole...) AND i try to use my left over paint that i've mixed up on postcard material.....waste not want not.... or something like that....... :)

I used to fight my urge to have multiple projects going at once thinking that if i just concentrate on one i would get more done....... Nope....... doesn't work out that way and i end up just frustrated...... So here lately i've just been going with the flow........

Prioritizing....... there's been a change up there too......... The way i've always prioritized my day was ...no artsy things could happen unless the house was clean and picked up......... for those of you already rolling your eyes you KNOW how that works out..... there's basically little to no time to play...... So here lately I've switched it up some and now i play first......CRAZY i know..... but honestly it somehow makes me more energetic and motivated the rest of the day...... who knew?! And  i've been getting more things done thru out the day........ both artsy and keeping up with the housework....
Maybe it fits in there with the idea that in order to care of everyone and everything else you have to take care of yourself first.....Why
do i find that notion so difficult to accept?......

Hang in there i'm sure to have some finished projects to show soon! Knock on wood!!! Hugs! deb

Take Your Wife To Work Day............

One day a week for the last month or so has been ' Take Your Wife To Work Day!'  Like most work places today its all about doing MORE with less ........less employees less supplies.... just squeeze blood from a turnip if you know what i mean...... well you see this stresses my hubby out........ i don't like it when my hubby is nothing but a stress ball....... So i decided to devote one day a week to helping hubby at his work..... just little stuff..... the stuff that niggles at the back of your mind......that you know you have to get done but there are more important things so the little things get put on the back burner and then build up and come back to bite you in the *ss... if you know what i mean...........lol.........

So i get my little fanny up at O' dark thirty.... (think 4am) bid Jinx adieu for the day and off we go on a wild 40 mile commute with wall to wall traffic.....yes even at 4am......nuts........

I tell hubby to have something planned for me....... anything..... I've done filing and computer input...... he has a huge board on his wall where he keeps track of all his 300+ vehicles and i check it for accuracy and up date it...... shoot i've even just cleaned his office...wipe everything down.....

I think when it comes down to it.......we just enjoy spending that time together..... sure i can take a little work off his shoulders but really we just enjoy each others company..... he introduces me to people......  i get him to take a break and step away from the desk for lunch......... i think its just a day where i help him BREATHE...

And if there are days where he just doesn't have anything for me to do then i take myself for a little walk around that gorgeous place. Palm trees.....grape vineyards ....turkey ....deer... just lovely...

This past week i did some filing but i also managed to turn this(above)

Into THIS!  All of his vehicles need to have emergency kits. And let me tell you that little strip of velcro on the bottom in the first picture was a stroke of genius! It stops the box from rolling around in the back of your trunk!
........And i always bring along a little something, something to work on if there is any down time...... I finally got all these cabinet knobs transformed into Christmas decor!  Hope you have a fabulous weekend!!! Hugs! deb

PS... and if your wondering if i get paid ?..... oh yes indeedy! In craft supplies please! LOL!

Work In Progress ... (WIP)

............I've been trying and trying to complete something to show you........ anything......and this is the closest i've come........ Anything i've tried to do lately just doesn't seem to come out right the first time..... Even the picture above....... I've already painted over those crackled ones you see....... the paint says terra cotta color but......its just too orangey (is that a word?) for me , so i'm gonna add a smidge of brown to it and see if that doesen't help..... What are these gonna be??? You'll have to wait and see!! Bwwwaaahhhahhhhaaa.....!

I've also been knee deep in a different project for June the Creative Dreamer's  Fourth Friday Challenge. You can go here to read all about it ....... and maybe JOIN in !!  As June says, 'What are those things you really would love to do, but are pretty hesitant to take on....? When you know what that is...go conquer it. Or if you can't conquer it, wrestle it to the ground and give it your absolute best..... Sometimes you may amaze yourself, sometimes you may sorta miss the mark you set for yourself. Either way is fine. The goal is to learn from the experience, and i guarantee, if you give it a shot , you will learn from it.'

Then on the fourth Friday of every month those who are participating can share their challenge on her linky list. So see i HAVE stuff to show you...... but for now...until Fourth Friday... it must remain a secret......   You watch and see......i have so many pans in the fire that they are all gonna get done at once and then it will be crafty overload around here!!! Big Hugs!! deb

Winter in Central Valley California.........

.............is a little different than i'm used to... LOL! To say the least....  even coming from TX, where it is relatively warm compared to alot of the country....... Sometimes i have to pinch myself and pinch the flowers just to be sure they are real . But they are! And i took this picture TODAY , not months ago!  Ofcourse all these plants handle cool weather rather well. Those petunias have just taken off! So with all the snow pictures floating around blogland at the moment i thought you might like a breath of Spring!

...........and here is a future project!  I sat the other night watching TV pulling fake flowers apart 'cause i have a plan!! Bwaaahhhhhaaa!!!!

And Jinx is giving you a smile. I call this his Happy Face. Click it large if you can. He's happy and content and feelin' loved. I love to see this expression on his little face........ Lots more to show and tell you so i'll be back soon. Right now i'm just enjoying an OMG!!! Rainy Weekend that won't make nary a dent in our drought situation but oh my is it lovely! The pitter patter on the roof and everything looking so shiny and clean out the window........ After living in two drought stricken places (TX, CA) you'll never find me complaining about the rain!

Hugs! deb

MailArt Postcard Swap!!!

Sorry for the blurry photo...still trying to master new camera....

A new year and a new Swap!! June, the Creative Dreamer is hosting another MailArt Postcard Swap!!! This is one Swap i always feel comfortable joining because she gives you so much 'stinkin' time to get yours ready and in the mail. I mean no pressure what so ever....... and i'm all over that! You can check out all the info here . She even gives you Themes...... which i'm lovin' because sometimes i just have no idea where to start....... Now the Theme for the current Swap that you see pictured here is New Beginnings.... take something you have created and may not particularly like and turn it into something new on a postcard.......

Well June tells me i must be the only creative person on the planet that does not hold onto things like that. (If i don't like it honey..its gone!) So i took a different twist on it and still staying with 'New' ,  i tried a 'new to me' technique....Acrylic Paint and Rubbing Alcohol... Awhile ago i stumbled across this video that completely mesmerized me and i KNEW it was something i wanted to try one day......... I wish i had a 'step by step ' of making this card but this is right when my camera died (still mourning that camera) so all i have is the finished piece...... It was fascinating to make......

But man i'am SOooo not an abstract person ..........so i had to do something else to it to bring it back into whimzy a little bit...hence the foot prints!  i tried them in black first but they just disappeared into the background so i used white and i really like how it turned out.You should be able to click on it and bring it up large..... Now the truly exciting part of a Swap is that when  you send your 'baby' that you've created out into the big , wide world something wonderful comes back to you!

This is the beautiful Postcard i received from Snap over there at the Twisty Lane..... Isn't it beautiful...... if only i could do abstract that well..... I just LOVE horses! So fortunate this is the Year of the Horse....... even if i'am a Sheep...hubby's a Dog.... What are you?
Thank you so much Snap! You really brightened my day when i opened the mailbox and saw this wonderful piece of Art! I'll bet you made everyone smile all the way from TX to CA! Hugs! deb

It Happened............

................ after 10 months of not a single drop it finally rained.........   Not alot.......... and not nearly enough .......... but rain....We still have 2 months left in our so called 'rainy season' so hopefully this will get the ball rolling.  We've had this big High Pressure system just parked over us for months.

......sending all the rain CA normally gets this time of year up into Canada where it gets an extra shot of cold air then the jet stream brings it back down to the states along with a 'polar vortex'. Its a terrible set up. CA bone dry and east coast freezing...... Well thats your little weather up date for the week. lol.  Keep your fingers crossed that the wet stuff keeps coming! Hugs! deb
